Principal Software Engineer, Platform Engineering

Overview In this role you will help define, build, and evolve reusable platform capabilities that enable engineering teams to develop, deploy, and operate software securely and efficiently. You will work across Builder Tools, Cybersecurity, Architecture, and AI platform teams to provide scalable, governed capabilities and drive adoption. The focus includes AI runtime safety, AI gateway patterns, and paved-road engineering standards to support secure, reliable development. You will lead hands-on execution while shaping strategy and architecture for Moderna’s engineering platforms. Compensation / Benefitscompetitive healthcarefitness, mindfulness, and mental health supportfamily planning benefitsgenerous paid time off, vacation, sabbatical, and recharge daysdiscretionary year-end shutdownequity or incentive compensation opportunities Responsibilities Design and build secure platform capabilities using Python/Type Script, Git Hub Actions, Pulumi, Docker, AWSLead AI runtime safety and AI gateway pattern development, including policy enforcement and telemetry Package approved tools and create reusable integration patterns to enable secure, paved-road workflows Collaborate with Cybersecurity, Architecture, and AI platform teams on standards and adoption strategy Develop templates, reference implementations, documentation, and examples to drive secure development and AI-enabled workflows Improve developer experience by reducing friction and standardizing workflows Establish operational practices for monitoring, alerts, dashboards, runbooks, and lifecycle management Identify recurring developer pain points and influence roadmap for shared frameworks and platform tooling Lead integration of CI/CD guardrails and policy checks into development workflows Contribute hands-on across priorities including developer tooling, platform automation, and operational support Mentor engineers, raise standards, and guide architecture and implementation decisions Key requirements 10+ years in software engineering, platform engineering, Dev Ops, infrastructure automation, secure software delivery, or related role Strong programming skills in Python or Type Script/Java Script Extensive experience with Git Hub, Git Hub Actions, CI/CD workflows Cloud experience with AWS or similar; Docker/containerized apps Deep understanding of secure software development, software supply chain, vulnerability management, secrets handling, identity and authorization, and policy enforcement Proven ability to set technical direction and design systems balancing security, usability, reliability, and productivity Experience leading technical initiatives with cross-functional stakeholders Mentoring and coaching engineers; guiding teams through architecture and operational tradeoffs Excellent troubleshooting across code, build pipelines, cloud infra, networking, and tooling Ability to operate in ambiguous problem spaces and contribute across platform responsibilitiescross-functional collaborationmentoring/leadershipproblem-solving in ambiguous spaces Python Type Script/Java Script Git Hub Actions
