Senior Machine Learning Engineer, Search & Intelligence

Overview As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Atlassian, you will lead the design, development, and productionization of advanced ML systems that improve how users discover and act on knowledge. You will own end-to-end ML projects, partnering with cross-functional teams to translate product challenges into scalable AI solutions. You’ll influence architecture, raise standards, and mentor other engineers to deliver intelligent search, recommendations, and NLP capabilities at scale. Compensation / Benefitshealth and wellbeing resourcespaid volunteer daysbonuses, commissions, and equityremote or flexible work optionsteam-based perkscareer development opportunities Responsibilities Design and implement state-of-the-art ML algorithms for production environments Own ML projects from concept to deployment and continuous improvement Develop scalable data and modeling approaches for large, complex datasets Build robust architectures meeting quality, latency, scale, reliability, privacy, and cost requirements Advance ML solutions in areas like information retrieval, search ranking, personalization, NLP, deep learning, and LLM applications Design rigorous experiments and evaluation strategies to measure impact and guide product decisions Collaborate with product, engineering, data science, analytics, and platform teams to integrate AI capabilities into Atlassian products Translate research into reliable, maintainable production systems Identify opportunities to improve model performance, operational efficiency, and customer outcomes Mentor ML engineers and contribute to technical strategy and best practices Foster a culture of experimentation, learning, and iterative delivery Key requirements Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, ML, AI, Data Science, or related field, or equivalent practical experience≥5 years of professional experience in ML or data science in production Strong Python programming and proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or Type Script Strong SQL knowledge and experience with large-scale data processing (e.g., Spark)Experience designing, training, evaluating, deploying, and scaling ML models on large datasets Ability to build performant, reliable, maintainable production software Familiarity with cloud environments for data and ML (e.g., AWS, Databricks)Experience designing evaluation strategies and using metrics and error analysis to improve models and products Collaboration across product, engineering, analytics, and data science teams Ability to navigate ambiguous problems, break them into components, and deliver practical solutions Strong written and verbal communication; agile mindset and rapid iterationcollaborationcommunicationmentoring Python Java Kotlin
